Overcoming Obstacles in Business: The Importance of Dedication and Persistance
by Don Heller on August 19, 2011Any great success story is exactly that: a story. If we hop in our handy time machine and travel back to our English Literature 101 classes, we’ll recall that in any story there is the protagonist, or hero, attempting to move the action of the story forward. But there must always be an antagonist, or villain, trying to block that action from happening (imagine how much shorter Lord Of The Rings would have been if nothing had happened along the way to the mountain). Sometimes villains come in the form of people, sometimes as circumstances, and in the most interesting of stories, from within. How the hero deals with these challenges is the heart of the story.
The Brentwood Country Mart: Local Neighborhood Hangout Throughout the Years
by Lee Zamos on August 2, 2011The Brentwood Country Mart is a landmark on the Westside. Anyone who lives west of the 405 has visited the big red barn on San Vicente and 26th Street. But over the years the neighborhood hang-out has reinvented itself several times.
Growing up in Brentwood in the 1970s, I have vivid memories of running errands with my mother at “The Mart.” The Mart Shoe Repair was a regular stop at the entrance, on our way to pick up fruit or baked goods at the market inside. Ironically both the toy store and the candy store were run by intimidating and not overly friendly older women. But the coin rides in the back by Hansel and Gretle, the children’s clothing store, were a reward for patience during our outing.
The Benefits of a Summer Home: Community, Tradition and Added Income
by Don Heller on July 13, 2011If you’re looking for evidence that summer is the season in which people choose to get away from their normal, everyday routine, one need look no further than the existence of the “summer home” in the U.S. In the U.K., they call them “holiday homes.” In New Zealand they’re known as “cribs.” It’s a concept that is both rooted in escapism and stability, for while you still benefit from the freedom and change of pace that comes with being on vacation, you have maintained the familiarity of the creature comforts found at home.
No more guessing at what lurks behind that hotel room door when you unlock it, or wondering where the best Italian restaurant is nearby. You know it all, you’ve seen it all and you love it all. You love it so much, in fact, that you have decided to take on the burdens of home ownership – twice.
